5Q Conceptual Framework — v1 · 2026.03.24

Abstract

This paper proposes the 5Q Conceptual Framework, reinterpreting the classical Chinese philosophical concept of Wuxing as a domain-agnostic ontological analysis tool. The term xing (行) and de (德) are treated as synonymous, both denoting an intrinsic quality of dynamic character—rendered in English as quality: a composite, layered attribute rather than an atomic element. Wood (boundary-setting), Fire (manifestation), Earth (substrate), Metal (regulation), and Water (circulation) are reconceptualized as five simultaneous ontological qualities of any entity, rather than sequential processing steps.

Seven core propositions are advanced, of which three are outlined here: (1) any entity simultaneously possesses all five qualities; (2) the generative cycle (Sheng) describes mutual promotion among qualities; (3) the controlling cycle (Ke) provides an intrinsic diagnostic structure for systemic imbalance via alternate-position restraint. … (Further propositions — covering dynamics, observer effects, and cross-scale parent-child mechanisms — are detailed in the full papers.)

The framework offers a shared philosophical vocabulary applicable across ontological design, system diagnosis, and knowledge completeness assessment in any domain.
